It’s because YOU are The Business Bro!
After several (‘nonconsecutive’ says Grover Cleveland) years of management, I lost my 100% retention record. It was bound to happen and really more of a laugh than anything else but I always like to maintain my illusions of immortality. I must admit that I’m excited to get back to interviewing from the sunny side of the table but as I’ve said (and perfected) to the many I’ve met over countless hospice volunteer shifts – I wish it were under different circumstances…
Job update
My 9/11 post talked about how I like to approach… er, approachability. I got off to a good start via a self-deprecating division introduction and I think my job is done in terms of propping open my proverbial door for any and all visitors.
It occurred to me in the aftermath that my intro was more like a short standup routine than anything else. I decided to write down what I said and in the days since I’ve continued compiling anything I’ve said that resembles something of a standup bit. The path to becoming an elite standup comic seems relatively easy compared to something like, say, becoming a surgeon – I don't need to spend a billion dollars on a decade of sleep-deprived schooling, I just need to have some shit to say for forty-five minutes or so. I think my routine is up to around seventeen seconds at the moment.
Podcast update
The fall means
I’ve recently tried Solvable, a show that discusses solutions to major long-term problems, and Deep Dive, a podcast from The Japan Times. The verdicts are mixed - Solvable is a great show if the topic matters to me or if Malcolm Gladwell is interviewing while Deep Dive is a pretty lousy show that I’ll tolerate due mostly to the lack of a better option.

Tim Harford is one of my few online subscriptions and the only one I read upon arrival – I thought this September post was among his best pieces.
I don’t know when or why I included Al-Jazeera into my weekly news list but I think it’s officially the last one I’ll give up. This editorial had more to offer in quotables than in the strength of the overall piece but I thought it was worth my time.
We’ll be back…
I got a bit of an admin backlog – who doesn’t? – so we’ll be back tomorrow with a part two for October alongside some thoughts about how I’m closing out 2019 on TOA.
Until then, many thanks to you, reader.
