proper admin - august 2019

Hi all,

Welcome to Proper Admin, a monthly rubblebucket of anything I couldn't quite fit into its own post.

New job notes

One thing about getting that new job I mentioned in yesterday's post - I'm going to try eating bananas again. Longtime readers may recall that I stopped eating these Yellow Death Sticks recently due to a newly discovered 'sensitivity' - I've since concluded I was sensitive to stress and I'm hoping moving on from my current position will restore bananas to its proper place within my diet.

TOA notes

I had to put the TOA Book Award on a brief hold because I realized I had not yet completed all the reading reviews for my finalists.

Sigh.

It'll get done this year, I promise.

A mouse in the house?

I may or may not have recently alluded to the return of my furry rodent friends in my Beacon Hill studio. The problem is, officially, not of my causing, but that's not much consolation. What the incident has made clear to me is that the most valuable feature of my apartment is how well I sleep - it's easily the best sleep I've had in my whole life. When something like a mouse disrupts my sleep, I start to recognize that there isn't much else keeping me in place.

Speaking of mice, I came across this gem of a Twitter account a few months ago - it highlights studies that claim to make a discovery about humans despite it only being confirmed in mice.

Food news

I think I found the worst Yelp page for any restaurant in the area (and possibly in history). It's one five-star review where the comment includes 'maybe it was a fluke, maybe I was drunk' followed by a series of one-star reviews that are stopped only by the bottom of the page. I'm willing to see this for myself - let me know, hungry reader.

Music news

I used to enjoy Lake Street Dive's cover of 'Strangers' by The Kinks, but then I found out that Norah Jones takes it to an entirely different level.

In other musical news, I was thinking about U2 when I came to a realization - for a band that's been around for over forty years, they don't have very many outright sad songs. In fact, I could come up with just three - 'Stay', 'Running To Stand Still', and 'Moment of Surrender'. I don't consider that a comprehensive list but given how I know so much about their work I think it does suggest something about their success. People eventually move on from sad songs but music with an uplifting quality has a certain enduring power.

Anything else?

I got a ton of nice comments about my post from July 12. Thanks to all who read and got in touch. I'll follow up later in the month with a couple of important leftover thoughts about that post.

Until then, come find me at Sapporo Ramen.

Thanks for reading.

Tim

2. Did I really read that book in high school?

3. The library finally gets on my case.
